The goal of any dental restoration is to protect and preserve the life of your tooth. With so many options, how will you know which dental restoration is right for you? At Bear Creek Dentistry & Orthodontics, our experienced dentists will go over each of your options, so you can make an educated choice.

Most dental restorations are condition-specific, meaning they fulfill a particular need that arises when your tooth becomes decayed, infected, or damaged due to trauma. In most cases, dental restorations are not interchangeable, though some overlap of purpose can occur.

Types of Dental Restorations

Here is a list of some of the most common dental restorations and their functions.

Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored material, called composite, to make small repairs to teeth including filling in chips, gaps, or reshaping a tooth.

When your tooth sustains mild to moderate decay, we need to remove it to prevent infection. This leaves a “cavity” or hole in your tooth, which opens it up to invasion by bacteria. To avoid this, we place a filling in the tooth to seal it and keep out anything that doesn’t belong. At our Houston dental office, we use only tooth-colored fillings that will blend in with your smile.

Dental crowns are one of the most protective dental restorations. If you break a tooth or have deep decay, the structure becomes compromised. A dental crown covers your tooth and protects it while you chew. Like a filling, it also seals your tooth to prevent decay.

We also place dental crowns on teeth that have had root canal treatment because they break more easily.

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth designed to conceal the gap in your smile after tooth loss. A dental bridge also keeps your natural teeth from shifting by acting as a placeholder. We design dental bridges to blend in with your other teeth so your smile does not advertise your dentistry.
